Here’s the layer-mulched bed shown in the last post, plus funky new wooden frame to keep it all in place. The wood is old 6×2 floor joists I got from a wood recycling co-op in Brighton (The Wood Store).
I used some more of the same wood to make another new bed. This time I did it the right way round – I made the frame first, then did the layer mulching inside it. For all you avid mulchers out there, the order this time was: cardboard laid onto the grass, bark chips, compost, seeds (mixed veg), manure. I think both beds would benefit from a top layer of straw to retain moisture, once I can find a good source of it (not paying pet-shop prices).
Now I need to think what I’ll plant nearby them to make it look less formal & also shelter the plants (assuming the slugs and snails let them grow). I’m thinking lavender, rosemary, sage, dandelions …
